JELD-WEN Windows Help New Development Achieve Zero Carbon

The ultimate in energy efficient DreamVu™ timber windows and doorsets from JELD-WEN have been specified for one of the first “zero carbon” developments in the country.

The development called Trinity Close, which is located in the village of Rackheath in Norwich, comprises 12 properties, all of which will boast a zero carbon footprint and meet Code Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The development has recently been awarded the prestigious ‘Residential Renewable Project of the Year 2011' title in the Renewable Awards 2011.

The properties are being built by developer Dove Jeffery Homes, based in Essex, on behalf of Wherry Housing Association, part of Circle Housing Group and Broadland District Council, with support from the Homes & Communities Agency. It is expected that the development will provide a benchmark for the sustainable new homes of the future, providing highly efficient affordable homes for local people to rent.

JELD-WEN’s energy efficient windows and doorsets were purchased through Jewsons in Norwich and were supplied to site on call-off from the merchant. Leon Healy from Jewsons in Norwich said: “We were really pleased to be involved with this one of the first zero carbon projects in the country. We worked closely with JELD-WEN to ensure that the products were supplied and delivered to meet the client’s needs, with the whole project proving to be a huge success.”
The project is being studied by the University of East Anglia as part of an Embodied Carbon Study, which will measure the carbon footprint of the build. It is also being monitored by GEO Green Energy Options – a manufacturer of display energy monitoring systems - for the next three years, to assess ongoing energy usage and carbon savings in this style of build.

Richard Dove, Head of Construction and Technology for Dove Jeffery Homes, said: “This is a very exciting development and it just shows how, through careful selection of high performance windows and doors that achieve very low U values, new homes can offer a much higher level of energy efficiency. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Wherry Housing Association and Broadland District Council to build homes that provide a benchmark for the future.”

Richard Dove continues: “As one of the first zero carbon developments in the UK, it was essential that the windows and doors met the exacting standards for energy efficiency. We chose JELD-WEN because of their expertise in developing energy efficient window and door solutions to meet the very low U values required, as part of minimising the impact of these properties on the environment. The result is homes that are attractive to look at, affordable to run and that have the very best sustainable credentials.”

Simon Barron, Area Sales Manager for JELD-WEN, explains: “We worked closely with Dove Jeffery Homes to produce a window and doorset solution that would meet these very low U value requirements. Our DreamVu™ windows and doorsets were specifically designed to help developers meet the higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes, so were perfect for this project. This should now set a precedent for other “zero carbon” developments in the future, where energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact is all important.”

JELD-WEN’s DreamVu® windows supplied to Dove Jeffery Homes feature triple glazing and achieve a market-leading U value of 0.7Wm2K, ensuring the residents on the development benefit from homes lower energy bills and reduced solar gain. All JELD-WEN’s windows and doorsets were supplied fully factory finished to the development, as part of enhancing their performance and aesthetics.

JELD-WEN also produced a bespoke design of DreamVu™ patio doorsets for this project that achieved a very low U value of 1.0Wm2K, which means the occupants will benefit from a light and airy living space, without compromising on energy efficiency.

In addition, JELD-WEN supplied composite doorsets to the properties, which provide six times the thermal performance of other materials, as well as offering an aesthetically pleasing design. The doorsets meet the requirements of PAS24 for enhanced security and both the ground floor doors and windows are supplied to meet the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Secured by Design specification.

The development consists of two bedroom flats, one and two bedroom bungalows and three and four bedroom houses. They feature a traditional brick built construction, using SIPs panels, for sensitive integration into the local community. To achieve the highest levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the development includes a highly insulated building fabric and incorporates external rainwater recycling, greywater recycling and air source heat pumps, as well as the energy efficient windows and doors supplied by JELD-WEN.

JELD-WEN’s timber windows and doorsets supplied to this development had full Chain of Custody certification, which means they originate from well managed forests with strict reforestation programmes.
