SANDTOFT’S Tiles Used On Over 1100 Properties For Liverpool Mutual Homes

Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) has refurbished 564 properties on the city’s Florence Melly Estate using Sandtoft’s Olympus clay double pantile. The project follows the renovation of 600 properties on the neighbouring Daneville Estate which featured Sandtoft’s Cassius clay roof tiles in Antique Slate.

Dave Woods, Assistant Director (property services) at LMH, said: “Having partnered with Sandtoft for the Daneville refurbishment, we knew they could provide the flexibility and quality of service we demand from our contractor partners.

“We were impressed by the cost and labour saving benefits of Cassius, so wanted to use another tile in Sandtoft’s New Generation range for this new project. The Olympus met our criteria as we needed a profile tile in a traditional colour that was in keeping with the surrounding architecture. Like the Cassius, it’s large format and has an open gauge, so is quick and easy to fit which is essential when working on large-scale refurbishments such as this. The finished roofs look great and have given these properties a new lease of life.”

Sandtoft also provided a lead replacement flashing system called Koraflex - an aluminium roll, coated with a butyl adhesive backing for superior adhesion. It is much lighter and more flexible than lead, making it easier to handle and install. In addition, as it is made from aluminium there is no risk to the environment from any chemical leaking onto the roof. Koraflex also eliminates occurrences of lead theft.

Craig Sidda, Sandtoft’s social housing manager added: “The Florence Melly project was a perfect fit for the Olympus. Its permanent colour and high performance weatherproof design make it an appealing, cost-effective choice.

“We’ve enjoyed a successful three-year partnership with LMH and are delighted to see our New Generation tiles used so effectively on such a high number of properties.”

The Olympus is made using ‘green’ electricity which is generated from environmentally-friendly sources such as wind farms and hydro-electric plants. Its innovative design dramatically reduces material and labour costs. Approximately 10 tiles are required per square metre, resulting in a covering capacity that matches the largest concrete tiles. In addition, an open gauge means there is no need for cutting at the eaves and ridge making the Olympus quick and easy to lay.
