SOUTH FACING - Crowning Achievement For British PV Specialist

Yield Of Huge On-Roof Solar System Already “Far Exceeding” Expectations.

The huge expanse of roof on an international data centre in Essex is now home for what is believed to be the one of the country’s largest on-roof solar PV systems. Completed earlier this year by British PV specialists, South Facing, the 600kWp installation at the NYSE Euronext complex in Basildon comprises more than 2,600 PV modules and is expected to generate 420,000kWh of electricity every year.

In view of the low pitch of the roof and to maximise output from the new system, the PV modules have been mounted on five roof bays of the 25,000m² facility. The complex design and installation has taken full account of the load bearing capacity of the steel frame building and wind loading conditions of the roof, and special aluminium mounting frames were designed by South Facing to avoid invalidating the warranty for the trapezoidal steel profile roof. The module installation was completed within 8 weeks, despite safe working conditions being severely limited by the build up of snow, ice and moisture each morning and afternoon.

Covering 4,500m² of the roof, the system design features 2,610 Tenesol 230Watt polycrystalline cell modules - selected for their high output performance and low weight specification - and six 100kWp SEIL inverters. All of the electricity generated by the system will be used within the international data centre, delivering a significant reduction to electricity costs for the customer. Indeed, NYSE has already reported that the yield obtained from the system since it was commissioned earlier this year has far exceeded the predicted levels and that carbon emissions are set to reduce by nearly 250 tons a year.

“The installation was a huge exercise and I’m delighted the project was completed on budget despite its complexity and Mother Nature creating all kinds of challenges for our installation team,” explains Clive Collison, Managing Director of South Facing.

“The scale of the project is testimony to the customer’s commitment to a sustainable future and, without doubt, it will deliver significant savings in energy costs in the years ahead while also substantially reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Indeed, performance figures since commissioning suggest that the system is generating 35% more than originally predicted. As one of the largest on-roof PV installations in the country, this project has shown what can be achieved when technical proficiency matches a company’s commitment to maximise resource efficiency.”

Hertfordshire-based, South Facing is one of the country’s leading Solar PV specialists and offers a comprehensive range of dedicated PV services nationwide. With extensive experience on large scale land-fixed and roof-mounted PV plant developments as well as multiple domestic installations, the company’ services cover everything from system design, procurement and engineering to installation, commissioning and system monitoring.

Accredited by the MCS since it was formed in 2007 and by the government since 2004, South Facing’s clients include major contractors, estate and property management organisations, airport operators and major corporations, as well as housing associations, landowners and farmers, local authorities and other Government agencies. It also works closely with architects and specifiers to ensure a PV solution reflects fully the design and structural integrity of both newbuild and retrofit building programmes.
