DANFOSS - New High-Power Drives Of Up To 250 kW Are Considerably Smaller

At the Hannover Messe industrial trade fair, which took place from the 4th to the 8th April 2011, Danfoss presented its new and considerably smaller housings for VLT® frequency converters with a power range of between 90 and 250 kW. Depending on their output and design, the devices are up to 66 percent smaller in volume for the same performance than the previous models. In addition, in launching the new housing series Danfoss has also extended the available options for the mains input side. For these devices, they comprise fuses, a load break switch, and - in the future - a contactor.

The new devices offer volume savings of between 25 and 66 percent. The greatest volume saving is made by the 250 kW VLT® frequency converters. Their volume is reduced from 0.450 m³ to just 0.014 m³. This makes the converters some of the smallest products in their performance classes.

Along with the new versions of the VLT® frequency converters with a power range of between 90 and 250 kW, Danfoss is also introducing detailed improvements that will save customers time and money.

For example, mains-side input options that were previously only available in large high-power drives are now also available for these devices. In future, the customer will be able to choose whether to order input fuses, a load break switch or an additional contactor along with the device. These additional extras - which can be incorporated on their own or in combination - are housed in a housing extension. This means a greater installation height overall whilst retaining the narrow and compact design.

Danfoss has further improved the cooling/ventilation of the devices. This means that the user has direct access to the cooling duct, which - in the new housings - also has a new ventilation module. The fan now works with 48 V DC and is supplied directly from the DC link. This reduces the discharge times following disconnection of the frequency converter, which saves time if maintenance or servicing is required. Moreover, the new fan is considerably more energy-efficient than the previous solution, which further increases the overall efficiency of the VLT®. This saves additional costs.

Furthermore, the new versions can also be fitted with a heating module to prevent the formation of condensation. The user can supply it with 230 V and control it from outside the device, e.g. with an external circuit that enables targeted activation and deactivation in accordance with ambient conditions. This means that it only works when really needed, thus reducing energy consumption to exactly what is required and no more.

There is a significant reduction of sizes between the old housings in comparison to the latest D frames.
