MARLEY ETERNIT - Award-Winning School Design Wrapped Up With Thrutone Fibre Cement Slate Finish

Marley Eternit’s Thrutone fibre cement slate has been specified as a cladding solution to form an integral part of an award-winning school development project in Doncaster. It provides a visually striking yet cost-effective solution to deliver the architect’s vision of a single material over the whole building envelope.

Deborah Saunt, partner at architects DSDHA, explains more: “We were commissioned to design a new nursery within the existing grounds of Canon Popham Primary School. Following discussions with the school Governors the design evolved into a dedicated new Foundation unit incorporating the existing reception class.”

At this stage the design for the building was envisaged as a carved form which would be shaped and articulated to allow views from the front of the school to the landscape beyond and to provide south-facing play space for the classrooms.

Deborah Saunt continues: “As a carved form we were keen for the building to be wrapped entirely in one material that was self coloured and unfinished. Central to the design was the need to recognise it was a building for children where the scale of a building needed to shift between being both intimate and monumental. The choice of material to be used externally was critical to prolonging this dynamic effect.”

A number of external cladding materials were considered before the design team - after consulting the product literature and other case studies - settled upon Marley Eternit’s Thrutone fibre cement slate.

Charlotte Hughes, campaign manager at Marley Eternit, comments: “Working to a tight budget meant the choice of Thrutone was a cost effective solution for DSDHA that still allowed them to maintain the original design intent for the development.”

The structure – which won an award from the RIBA following completion – has a total façade area of 260m2 – all of which was covered using the Thrutone fibre cement slate. Charlotte Hughes continues: “As well as offering striking contemporary and flexible design options that’s a real alternative to natural slate, fibre cement slate also provides additional sustainable benefits as all of Marley Eternit’s fibre cement slates can achieve an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide to Specification.”

Deborah Saunt concludes: “The finished project provides a truly accessible yet visually delightful addition to the facilities at Canon Popham School. The choice of the Thrutone slate as the cladding material brings the original design vision to life by ‘wrapping’ the build in a uniform manner that offers simplicity, functionality and design aesthetics – all within budget. Everyone, including all those connected with the school, couldn’t be happier with the finished effect.”
