HVMS Helps Transform The City Of London’s Skyline With New 33kV Transformers

HVMS has successfully secured a contract to provide two new 11/15MVA 33/11kV Midel fluid filled power transformers for the City of London latest skyline edition – 20 Fenchurch Street. HVMS have been retained directly by the developer 20 Fenchurch Sreet (GP) Ltd which itself is a JV between LandSecurities and Canary Wharf Contractors. With insufficient capacity in the City at 11kV and growing electrical demand for such structures the developers have turned to 33kV as the incoming supply voltage and require two 33kV 11/15MVA transformers each weighing in excess of 30t, which will be supplied and installed in the basement of the building by HVMS.

As a general rule, buildings should be bigger at the bottom than they are at the top. Ask any Ancient Egyptian. The buildings designer Rafael Viñoly has turned that rule upside-down, in more than one sense. His design for the new 38-storey building, dubbed the Walkie-Talkie, is stunning on a purely aesthetic level. But like all great ideas, it's rooted in common sense. It's a way of incorporating larger floorplates without increasing the building footprint that has serious commercial appeal. 63,800 square metres of it.

As well as being a heavyweight business address in the heart of the city, this will be a building for all Londoners. 155 metres up, a spectacular Sky Garden will offer views across the capital and – on a good day – far beyond. Extending to over 2,780 square metres, it will include an outside roof terrace, botanical gardens, and a restaurant with 360-degree views. It will come as no surprise to learn that this will be London's highest public park. The building is due to be completed in 2014.
