HVMS - Operation & Maintenance Of The Electrical Distribution Network For Britain’s Longest & Newest Road Tunnel – The Hindhead Tunnel

Following the successful completion and opening this week of the new Hindhead Tunnel, HVMS have now been awarded a contract with responsibility for operation, control and maintenance of the Tunnels HV and LV distribution network for and on behalf of Enterprise-Mouchel for a 5 year period from the 27th July 2011. Enterprise-Mouchel are working as a Highways Agency Managing Agent Contractor with a responsibility for managing the tunnel operations for 25 years.

HVMS will undertake quarterly substation inspections, annual maintenance of the electrical distribution network, provide Senior Authorised Persons (SAP) and Authorised Persons (AP) duties.

The Hindhead Tunnel opened on 27 July 2011, as part of the new Hindhead bypass for the A3 road in Surrey. It forms part of the 4-mile (6.4-kilometre) dual carriageway being built to replace the last remaining stretch of single carriageway on the 68-mile (109-kilometre) London to Portsmouth road. At 1.14 miles long, the tunnel is the longest non-estuarial road tunnel in the UK and 4,322 people have worked on the project which started on site in 2007. It has since taken +290,000 man-hours to dig the tunnels and nearly 1.4Million man hours were worked on the project without an accident. The tunnel contains 156 miles of cable and has 104 CCTV cameras to help keep us safe. Despite being significantly more expensive than building a surface road, a tunnel was preferred after two alternative surface schemes were rejected on environmental grounds. The decision to put part of the road in a tunnel has meant that at a cost of about £155,000 per metre the underground portion of the new road will be the second most expensive road in the UK per mile, after Limehouse Link Tunnel in London.
