PURMO Research Shows Radiators Are The Most Versatile Heat Emitters

Research conducted by the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), commissioned by Purmo, has demonstrated that radiators are one of the most versatile forms of heat emitter on the market today. Although now regarded as a traditional heating product, they are equal to being used with almost any heat source, including renewable heating technology, as they can operate energy efficiently at lower temperatures. They are also excellent for use in multi-purpose rooms such as bedrooms which double as home offices during the day, offering a fast warm up or cooling down time, simply by using a thermostatic radiator valve.

“The research supported what we’ve always known, that radiators are highly versatile,” says Chris Edwards, Sales and Marketing Director for Purmo UK. “They can be used in conjunction with the kind of low water temperature systems often used with underfloor heating, yet they are far easier to retrofit with a renewable system in an existing property. In renovation projects, a like for like replacement is often the easiest approach, and because of their rapid response to changing temperature requirements, they are very end user friendly.”

Being able to use radiators with renewable systems is also a big advantage for the installer. With a lot of new technology to learn, the radiator is one aspect of new systems which is not only familiar, but well tried and tested. The installer can also offer the interior designer or home owner a whole host of colour and style options to suit any décor from minimalist to traditional columns, with a variety of panel models as well. Using radiators as opposed to underfloor heating allows complete freedom of choice of floor covering. Whereas some types of floor treatment, such as thick carpets with high TOG values, do not work so well with underfloor heating, radiators are unaffected by this and will deliver rapid, even heating in any type of room. “Given the right circumstances, underfloor heating can be an excellent option,” adds Chris Edwards, “but radiators are, quite simply, an excellent option in every setting.”

The skill lies, as it always has, in sizing the radiator correctly for the system and the room, the HUT research demonstrates. And the good news is that as technology advances or home insulation improves, should heat demand diminish, the radiator can emit a lower requirement for heat without becoming outdated; it will simply work less hard. This is already a familiar concept as radiators are versatile enough to provide less heat in early spring and late autumn than in mid winter, simply by adjusting the TRV. In a changeable UK climate we are already very familiar with the idea that we will need more heat on one day than another, and are aware that the radiator is often the best way to deliver this.

This is also true over the course of 24 hours. Many people now work from home using their bedroom as an office during the day, requiring a warm environment in order to work in comfort. At the end of the day, however, sleep is aided by a cooler temperature, so the end user can simply turn the TRV down to a lower setting to provide less heat from the same emitter.

Once the correct radiator has been specified, fitting is straightforward and easy for any competent installer. Purmo radiators have a low water content and will provide efficient heat emission for many years, benefiting from a ten year guarantee as standard, but having a much longer lifecycle than this in practice. The right radiator can also make clever use of space in a property. New upright models, or long, low profile models can be chosen to make use of difficult spaces such as narrow upright strips of wall or the space in front of floor to ceiling windows. This gives the occupier far more flexibility to create a practical layout within each room.
