VENTURE Provide The Light At St Augustine’s

Metal halide lamps and control gear supplied by Venture Lighting have been used in the recent refurbishment of the St Augustine of Hippo Church, Edgbaston, Birmingham. Specified and supplied by ecclesiastical lighting specialists Lighting Dynamics UK, Venture’s lamps were chosen for the project for their excellent colour rendition, long lamp life and low maintenance costs.

St Augustine’s is a Grade II* Listed building in a geometric gothic style, with a striking painted Chancel ceiling and a wealth of stone carvings throughout the interior. The church was built in 1868 and ten years later had its impressive tower and spire added, which at 185 feet makes it the tallest in Birmingham.

Sutton Coldfield based, Lighting Dynamics UK were appointed for the refurbishment project by the PCC (Parochial Church Council) with the churchwarden, Stephen Hartland, acting as project leader on behalf of the PCC. Chosen for their vast expertise in lighting design and specification, Lighting Dynamics UK supply interior and exterior illumination for a variety of ecclesiastical buildings from cathedrals to small rural churches throughout the UK.

Working in conjunction with the appointed church architect, Mark Evans and electrical installers A J Electrics (Coleshill) Ltd, Lighting Dynamics UK provided a unique dimming/lighting controls system which is linked to detection sensors and wall mounted control panels at various points around the building. The old linear tungsten halogen lamps and old style reflector spotlights were replaced, and Venture’s 70W and 150W ceramic single ended metal halide lamps were installed, in conjunction with the company’s Ventronic low wattage “switch dim” electronic ballasts.

Using the latest developments in slip cast, single piece, arc tube technology, Venture’s robust ceramic lamps provide an unbeatable combination in terms of both performance and reliability. Delivering up to 100 lumens per watt to provide a clean and even white light, the excellent colour rendering qualities of Venture’s ceramic range makes them perfect for interior applications where the light can be used to enhance the colour, features and textures on display.

Gerry Browne of Lighting Dynamics UK commented “We have provided an ideal, economical solution for St Augustine’s. As well as a reduction in running costs the new lighting now clearly accentuates the many architectural features throughout this magnificent church”.
