CONEX To The Rescue

When a fire was caused by using soldering on copper pipes in a confined roof space, the contractors working on a recent Decent Homes project were faced with having to down tools. Quick, easy and above all safe to fit, >B< Press fittings from Conex provided contractors with a solution which allowed them to carry on working without interruption.

After the accident - which caused to thousands of pounds worth of fire damage and a risk to lives - the local HSE refused to issue any more hot work permits for work in confined spaces, including the lofts and underfloor areas that the contractors needed to access. “We needed a flame-free solution – and we needed it fast,” says Steve Redmond of Redmond Heating, one of the contractors on the project to install new kitchens, bathrooms and central heating in a number properties. “We were already used to using Conex fittings so we got in touch with them and they stepped in fast with an answer.”

The very next day Conex presented to the local council on behalf of Redmonds, suggesting using the company’s >B< Press fittings. Conex >B< Press fittings are the ultimate in speedy, reliable fitting of copper pipes without the need for solder, adhesives or any other jointing material – the perfect flame-free system.

Conex >B< Press can be used very effectively in a wide variety of applications – hot and cold water, gas, and solar – and is available in a variety of sizes from 15-108mm. Unlike other crimp fitting systems on the market, Conex >B< Press benefits from a 3-point press - two presses either side of the bead and one press crimping the o-ring. This provides a more secure joint than the 2-point press offered by alternative systems. Using a special Conex mechanical press tool the joint is permanently made and the fitting cannot be dismounted.

The Conex >B< Press fittings were supplied through the local Grahams branch. Chris Burnip, Grahams Area Sales Director takes up the story. “This was a very urgent requirement for a large number of fittings, and although we already had a good relationship with Conex, we were all amazed at how quickly they came up with a bespoke solution to the problem,” he says. “They even trained the fitters on site and they were immediately converted to >B< Press because it’s so much quicker to fit than soldering.”
