BAXI Ecogen Cuts Fuel Poverty And Carbon Emissions On PEARL2 Project

PEARL2 (Pendle Enterprise and Regeneration Ltd) has opted for Baxi Ecogen micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) as the low carbon heating and hot water solution for Stanley Street – Nelson, the latest phase of Pendle Council’s multi-million pound improvement programme in Whitefield, Nelson, Lancashire.

PEARL2 is a regeneration partnership between Pendle Council and Barnfield Construction. It aims to make Pendle a better place to live, learn, work, play and visit. This project sees fourteen homes being transformed on Stanley Street. Twelve have been joined to make six spacious double fronted homes. The site is also in a conservation area and the major challenge for the Senior Regeneration Officer – Iftekhar Bokhari was to achieve long-term sustainability by building excellent energy efficiency into the properties, whilst still meeting heritage requirements and the town’s housing needs.

‘Installing renewable technology was central to reducing energy costs and lowering the properties carbon footprints. Baxi Ecogen micro-CHP units proved to be the perfect choice’. Baxi Ecogen, from Baxi, is a direct replacement for old inefficient boilers, yet provides electricity as well as heating and hot water.

The team had ruled out solar thermal water heating and solar PV panels because of the properties’ orientation. Although on neighbouring Every street solar panels were installed . The Whitefield scheme, which includes the current Stanley Street project is exemplar and demonstrates to other local authorities on how to improve energy efficiency of existing buildings by integrating different technologies and cut carbon whilst maintaining a heritage conservation area.

The revolutionary Baxi Ecogen is the first commercially available micro-CHP unit for the home. The appliance is designed around a Free Piston Stirling Engine (FPSE) which provides central heating and domestic hot water and up to 1 kW of electricity. The intelligent controls within the Baxi Ecogen constantly adjust the engine to ensure maximum electrical generation and user comfort whilst simultaneously minimising fuel costs.

Extensive field trials have shown that Baxi Ecogen units can reliably satisfy up to two thirds of a typical household’s electrical requirements. Around one third of this energy can be used in the home and another third exported back to the grid at a price of 10pkWh, using the new Government Feed-In Tariffs (FIT) scheme, effective from April 2010. This makes it ideal for specification as a fuel and carbon-cutting heating solution in both new-build and replacement projects.

Taking into account the savings made by the householders using the electricity they generate to offset some of the electricity they would otherwise have to buy from their energy supplier, and the income from the Feed-in Tariff, they could save around £600 annually on their energy bills.

As one of Europe’s largest and most innovative manufacturers and distributors of domestic and commercial water and space heating system solutions, BDR Thermea, formerly known as Baxi Group, is committed to developing and supplying innovative new heating low carbon technologies. These innovations will play an important role in tackling climate change, reducing the use of fossil fuels and addressing issues of fuel poverty.

The company’s portfolio includes some of the best known and respected brands including Baxi, Potterton, Main, Heatrae Sadia, Valor, Andrews Water Heaters, Santon, Elson, Baxi Senertec and Potterton, enabling BDR Thermea to supply whole system solutions to meet specifiers’ needs.
