DAIKIN UK Opens Regional Training Centre At West Suffolk College

Daikin UK and West Suffolk College, have joined forces to open an East Anglia training centre to help increase the uptake of renewable energy heating solutions in the region.

The centre will provide much-needed training for engineers in renewable heating technologies. With oil prices increasing, the market for renewable energy solutions is growing rapidly in the region, which has a high proportion of properties in off-gas locations.

The opening of this centre of excellence is the latest regional training centre to be established in the UK as a result of partnerships between Daikin UK and vocational training colleges. The facility will enable heating and plumbing contractors within East Anglia to benefit from customised product training, which is designed to raise standards, set industry benchmarks and help installers to develop both product and service expertise. Previously, installers from the East of England were required to travel to specialist training centres in Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester or Surrey in order to receive this expert tuition.

A ceremony to mark the opening was held at the Bury St Edmunds college on Wednesday 30th March, where Gary Barrington, Training Manager of Daikin UK and James Moffat, Gas & Oil Centre Manager at West Suffolk College, performed the ceremony, before an audience of invited guests.

During the event, a number of key speakers from Daikin UK and West Suffolk college gave speeches to mark the occasion.

Gary Barrington, Daikin UK Training Manager said: “Daikin UK is a wholly owned affiliate of Daikin Europe which has the most advanced air-conditioning factories in Europe. Within the UK, we have five regional in-house, purpose-built training centres, from Glasgow to Bristol. We have developed relationships with four colleges – in Bath, Dudley, north London and now West Suffolk – in response to high industry demand for training.”

Iain Bevan, Daikin UK National Sales Manager said: “Heating and renewables is a really important area for us. We have seen substantial sales growth over the past 12 months, and around a third of units sold have been in this sector. By 2015, we anticipate securing further market share as a result of strong legislative drivers.”

Dr Ann Williams, West Suffolk College Principal said: “To me this is very much a symbiotic relationship. We wouldn’t be in a position to do this training without the support of Daikin UK in providing the resources and support.

“There is an enormous amount of potential with the low carbon agenda. In this part of East Anglia we have got quite a lot of new development going on, and there is an awful lot of retrofit as well - there are a lot of very old buildings that could benefit from these new technologies. We are a very high profile training provider, and would hope to be training people not just from Suffolk but across the eastern region. As well as training engineers, one of the things we want to do is to inform people what the options are because, at the end of the day, it is the customer who has to decide that this is what they want.”

More than £12,000 worth of Daikin Altherma products has been installed within this dedicated training facility at Anglian Lane. Both low and high temperature air-to-water heat pumps are fully operational, along with examples of other systems that can be linked to these air source heat pump systems, such as solar thermal technology, under floor heating, low temperature radiators and heat skirt products, together with large detailed graphical displays, which are mounted within the areas. The next phase will include the installation of £15,000 worth of Daikin VRVIII Heat Recovery equipment, which is used in commercial buildings

West Suffolk College will also be offering a number of certificated courses on sustainable energy use, including courses on air-to-water heat pumps and photovoltaic installation.

Daikin UK offers a comprehensive choice of domestic heating and renewable energy products, ideally suited to the UK housing market. Its heating and renewable products provide energy efficient heating and hot water, which deliver significant cost savings especially in rural off-gas areas. With an extensive range of high efficiency heat pumps and solar thermal systems, Daikin offers the most advanced solutions for new builds, renovation projects and retrofit installations – from detached rural homes and harder to heat older properties to city centre apartment schemes and affordable housing.
