DREADNOUGHT Re-Introduces Historic Handformed Tile

Renowned clay roof tile manufacturer Dreadnought is re-launching its range of handformed tiles at the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show (March 24-27, Birmingham NEC) in response to overwhelming demand for the unique product.

The new Dreadnought Handformed plain tile delivers a rustic, more distinctive roofscape that is highly individual, adding character, value and kerb appeal to self-build and renovation projects and bringing some of Dreadnought’s 200 year history to each and every project.

The original Dreadnought handmade tiles were widely acknowledged as being the finest available and the Staffordshire-based manufacturer plans to achieve this success once again, as managing director Alex Patrick-Smith explained: “We’ve combined our vast experience of the market and the manufacturing process to produce a new range of authentic, rustic-looking handformed tiles that are, quite simply, the best looking and highest performing available.”

The new range comes in three natural colours – Staffordshire Blue, Country Brown and Multi (mixed shade of reds, blue and browns).

Dreadnought products are noted for their outstanding looks, durability and colour-fastness. The company prides itself on being the only producer to make ‘naturally coloured’ tiles – no pigments, stains or coatings are used during manufacture. Colour is achieved by precise control of the kiln atmosphere and different firing techniques, delivering tiles that mellow gracefully with age but do not fade.

Production takes place at its factory in Brierley Hill, near Birmingham. Etruria Marl clay is sourced from pits half a mile from the plant, minimising transport needs and lessening environmental impact. Tiles are fired to 1,130°C, which translates to a freeze/thaw performance of more than 400 cycles, by far the highest in the industry. Current European standards require plain clay tiles for use in the UK to withstand 100 freeze/thaw cycles under method D of EN 539-2:2006.
